Koh Lipe Island Guide 2025 — Thailand's Maldives & How to Get There

Koh Lipe's impossibly blue water, vibrant coral, and car-free Walking Street make it one of Thailand's most coveted destinations. Here's everything you need to plan your trip.

Koh Lipe sits near the Malaysian border in Satun Province — remote enough to stay relatively unspoiled, but well-connected enough for an easy visit. Its three main beaches and compact car-free centre make it ideal for a 3–5 night stay.

🚢 Getting to Koh Lipe

From Pak Bara Pier (Satun)

  • Speedboat: approx. 1 hr 30 min. ฿600–700.
  • Departs: 10:00, 12:00 (high season). Book in advance.

From Langkawi, Malaysia

  • International speedboat: 45 min. USD 35–40 / ฿1,200.
  • Departs: 09:30 from Telaga Harbour (high season only). Great for combining a Malaysia–Thailand trip.

From Koh Lanta (via ferry hopping)

  • High season ferry via Koh Mook and Koh Ngai: full day journey. ฿1,200–1,500 all-in.

🏖️ The Three Beaches

Sunrise Beach

The longest beach facing east — calm in the morning, great for snorkelling the outer reef. Most resorts and restaurants are on Sunrise Beach Road behind the sand.

Sunset Beach

Faces west for iconic sunsets. Usually quieter than Sunrise. Snorkelling is excellent off the southern rocks.

Pattaya Beach

On the north side. The famous Walking Street separates it from the centre. Shallow and calm — good for swimming and beach bars.

🐠 Snorkelling & Diving

Koh Lipe sits within the Tarutao National Marine Park — so the marine life is exceptional. Snorkelling straight from the beaches is good year-round. Day trips by longtail or speedboat visit Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, and Koh Yang — uninhabited islands with pristine reefs. Dive courses available from ฿12,000 (PADI Open Water).

✅ Practical Tips

  • No cars or motorbikes on the island — Walking Street is the main artery.
  • Passport required at the pier (national park registration).
  • The island gets crowded Jan–Feb; book early and expect higher prices.
  • There's a ฿200 national park fee payable on arrival at the pier.
  • Low season (May–Oct): half the island closes, but dramatic empty beaches await.
