Koh Yao Yai & Koh Yao Noi Guide 2025 — Phang Nga Bay's Quiet Gems
Between Phuket and Krabi lie two Muslim fishing islands almost untouched by mass tourism. Here's how to get to Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi and what to do there.
Koh Yao Yai (Big Long Island) and Koh Yao Noi (Little Long Island) sit in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, surrounded by the dramatic karst scenery that made the region famous. Yet unlike nearby Phuket and Krabi, they've been slow to develop — preserving a way of life largely unchanged for decades.
🚢 Getting to Koh Yao
From Phuket (Bang Rong Pier)
- To Koh Yao Noi: Longtail boat, 30 min, ฿80 (passenger ferry). Departs: 07:00–17:30, roughly hourly.
- To Koh Yao Yai: Longtail boat, 45 min, ฿80. Less frequent — check schedule at pier.
From Krabi (Tha Lane Bay / Ao Thalane)
- Speedboat charter or longtail. 45 min to Koh Yao Noi, 1 hr to Koh Yao Yai.
🌿 What's Different About Koh Yao
These are predominantly Muslim communities — alcohol is available at resorts but not at local shops or restaurants. Dress respectfully when visiting local villages. Friday is the weekly holy day — some local businesses close at midday.
The landscape is the thing: mangroves, rubber plantations, rice paddies, and dramatic karst views across the bay. This is countryside Thailand in the sea.
🚴 Things to Do
- Cycling: Both islands are flat enough to explore by bicycle (฿100/day rental). Koh Yao Noi has a circuit around the coast.
- Kayaking: Paddle through mangroves and explore sea caves and hidden lagoons in the bay.
- Rock Climbing: Koh Yao Noi has a small but excellent climbing community. Day trips to nearby karsts available.
- Snorkelling: Day trips to reefs around the small islands in Phang Nga Bay.
- Village Visits: Buy batik and local crafts at community workshops in Ban Tha Kai village.
🏨 Where to Stay
Koh Yao Noi has the most options, including a few excellent boutique resorts. Six Senses Yao Noi is one of Thailand's top luxury resorts. Budget bungalows are available from ฿600–800/night. Koh Yao Yai is even quieter with fewer resorts — ideal for a complete digital detox.
✅ Tips
- Both islands are best explored by motorbike (฿200/day) or bicycle.
- Dress modestly when visiting villages — light long trousers and a cover-up are appreciated.
- No wild nightlife here — these islands are for nature, culture, and genuine relaxation.
- Combined Phuket + Koh Yao trip makes a perfect itinerary — ferry there, fly home.
